Learning Clubs

Who it’s for

We support adults with learning disabilities who want to develop their basic skills in reading, writing, communication and social confidence. We don’t assume or need you to have great skill in reading, writing or numbers in order to participate. Where you can already read, write or use numbers there will be the opportunity to develop those skills further. We do ask that you or someone who supports you does chat with a tutor before enrolling in a class to make sure the support is suitable.

What’s involved

Wherever you start, we develop your skills using a mixture of quizzes, games and activities inspired by topical issues, current events or your own personal interests. Examples include a series of sessions themed around the different countries participating in the rugby or football world cup competitions, a theme around modes of transport or wild animals is often popular. We also celebrate the seasons, national holidays or various festivals relevant to our students.

We often take a break over summer and move from “Learning Clubs” to our “Activity Clubs” where we enjoy more fun in the outdoors, playing games while still learning.

Outcomes

We practice adding or taking away numbers, we plan spending for meals, buying a snack in a cafe or understanding tickets. Basic number recognition is developed through playing games like bingo, darts or simple card games. And music, there’s always music! Unless there’s not – we do have plans for Quiet Clubs for our friends who don’t like loud noises.
