Track2000 Grant Legacy Fund logo

We are very happy to announce that we have been award a grant from the Track 2000 Grant Legacy Fund to help our learning club participants.

Within a short time of the Covid-19 pandemic closing all face-to-face activities, we were providing learning clubs over Zoom. However, many individual families or service users did not have access laptops, tablets or smartphones to be able to access email or Zoom and individual service users/students did not have the skills or support to use computer equipment to interact with the classes.

Throughout 2020 and into 2021, we worked to overcome these challenges and reconnect with as many of our core members as we could and have been delivering two online learning clubs each week using Zoom.

The grant from the Track 2000 Grant Legacy Fund will help us provide:

  • equipment for our learners to access technology while we continue our Zoom classes;
  • PPE , sanitizing agents and extra precautions as they tentatively engage with services in the emerging “new normal”,
  • individual packages of equipment (pens, books, counters etc) that can be easily sanitized and safely stored, when we are able to restart our in-person learning clubs.

We are taking a break

Our “Stay Safe, Stay Learning” classes are taking a break to give our tutors and volunteers time for a bit of R & R. Thank you Fran Pears, Rosie, Jayne and Jenny! For the time being, our Learning Clubs will continue on Zoom rather than in person. The virtual learning classes will be back from Wednesday, 9th September. If you or someone you know would like to attend, please contact Fran Pears – though she may not get back to you as quickly as normal, because she’s taking a break. 😀

We hope all our learners are keeping safe during the COVID-19 pandemic times.

Whilst we don’t know when we will all be able to meet in person, we have been experimenting with meeting virtually using software called Zoom.

We know that not all of our learners have a computer or a tablet or phone or the support to operate iit, some learners have been benefiting from meeting over Zoom on a Wednesday afternoon with our amazing tutors Fran Pears of Fran Pears Learning and Rosie.

We are very happy to announce that CABS-Cardiff has received an award from Virgin Money’s Heart of the Community Fund. voted for by Virgin Money customers who visited the Virgin Money Lounge in Cardiff’s Old Library building.

The money will be used to run an Awards Day for our learners in July, 2020.

We’ll post details nearer the time.

Thank you to all the Virgin Money Lounge customers who voted for CABS-Cardiff

The Heart of the Community Fund launched in 2018 to support community regeneration in the cities home to a Virgin Money Lounge; Glasgow, Sheffield, Norwich, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Manchester and London.

Every three months three local community organisations from each of the cities are given the chance to receive £2,000 – with awards of £1,000 and £500 for two runners-up.

The awards are voted for by Virgin Money customers. There is a voting unit in each of the Lounges and visitors can pick up a small red heart when they visit, to put into the tube named with the community organisation they’d most like to support.

We regret to announce the temporary suspension of our CABS-Cardiff Learning Clubs.

We will be posting important updates here about ongoing online opportunities to interact, socialise and continue our learning…

Until the current Covid-19 crisis is better controlled we believe it is in the best interests of our wonderful club members, their amazing support workers and our talented tutors to minimise the opportunity for accidental spreading of infection. Please do keep in touch.

We very much look forward to restarting clubs, some time after Easter, as soon as conditions permit. Be safe, keep washing your hands and be healthy. Please do join our online challenges as they arrive. (Missing you already… ?)

THREE Learning Clubs for adults with a learning disability can continue for another year.

Our three Learning Clubs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday can run again and all of them can now be for two hours at Hubs around Cardiff.

We can continue to offer these basic skills learning clubs at no charge.

Using Songs and games our learning clubs offer adults with learning disabilities to practise using numbers and words in everyday life. There’s usually a chance for a social cuppa and a chat as well.

CABS Founder, Margaret Collins

CABS-Cardiff Founder, Dr Margaret Collins

Dr Margaret Collins, Chair of CABS-Cardiff said:

“We are so pleased to receive this award, which will allow us to continue our basic skills learning clubs and even extend their length.

Our Learning Clubs will now run in public community spaces which would foster community inclusion and increased social visibility.

While I feel that this work should be supported and funded by government, our work is filling a gap in provision and really changing lives, enabling social engagement and increasing the visibility of participants in the community.”

Our Learning Clubs will take place:

  • on Wednesday afternoons at Llanrumney Hub;
  • on Thursday afternoons at Llanishen Hub;
  • on Friday afternoons at Ely and Caerau Hub;
